Hawk Field is, quite frankly, more fun than you probably thought it was. Located at Standing Bear Lake Park right around 138th and Fort Street in West Omaha, Hawk Field is home to Nebraska’s own Omahawks Radio Controlled Airplane Club. The Omahawks are the largest AMA chartered R/C club in the Midwest.

If R/C doesn’t exactly ring a bell for you, see the videos below or think of Max flying a mini-plane around in Wes Anderson’s Rushmore. Rushmore is actually a pretty apt description of R/C: a cult hit that can still be a whole bunch of fun for the rest of us. Hawk Field boasts a 500 x 40 (foot) paved runway surrounded by pit areas, just like a real airfield. A few times a month the club meets and takes its planes to the skies. Be there for a look at this unique hobby.

The park itself also has picnic areas, walking trails that will lead you around the lake, and all the other facilities needed to make it a fun destination for pilots and non-pilots alike.
