Eppley Airfield

Eppley Airfield is a nice little airport. Located just a few minutes (about 3 mi) northeast of downtown, like a lot of things in Omaha, it’s just the right size. With little of the traffic and congestion that plagues many US airports, at Eppley, you can step on a plane only a few minutes after leaving your house or hotel room. You can even try to squeeze in a quick 18 at your preferred pre-flight golf club, if you swing that way. Click below to jump to the Eppley Airfield information you crave, or read on to learn more about Eppley:

Prior to being called Eppley Airfield, wee Omaha Municipal Airport was converted into a modern jet port in 1959-60, following a $1 million donation from the estate of Omaha hotel magnate Eugene C. Eppley. Today, almost 4.5 million passengers pass through Eppley each year.

While certainly not as large as JFK, LAX, or O’Hare, Eppley Airfield offers service to popular stops across the country. Southwest Airlines and United Airlines dominate the airport, accounting for nearly 50% of the almost 400 flights Eppley handles per week. The Airfield serves not only Omaha and Council Bluffs, but also eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, northern Kansas, northwest Missouri, and even southern South Dakota.

Book Early and Save!In fact, Eppley Airfield boasts six beautiful runways, making it the largest airport in Nebraska. Hawk Field, Omaha’s other airport, only has one runway. Then again, Hawk Field is designed for unmanned, radio-controlled planes, and Eppley Airfield handles big, people-moving jets. So, perhaps the proportions are just about right. But Hawk Field is fun, check it out!

Local trivia: those coming to Eppley from downtown Omaha actually have to cross through Iowa via the small slice of Abbott Drive signed as Iowa Highway 165. Those coming from Iowa have to cross the Missouri River into Nebraska. And those coming from the north probably think all this crossing is very comical, as they do neither! Specific arrival and departure information can be found from Eppley Airfield’s website.

Busses

Busses stop at the Airfield every 30 minutes when in service, but be sure to check the Omaha Metro Area Transit website to make sure, as hours are limited. The schedule for Route #16, which stops at the airport terminal, can be found by searching here. If you need to make a bus connection to Route #16, which is pretty likely unless you’re staying directly downtown, a look at the bus system map might be helpful.

Airport Parking

Airport ParkingLong-Term parking starts at $2 per half hour, capped at $12 a day, while the convenient Quick-Park starts at .75 per 20 minutes, capped at $24 a day. Those willing to walk a little longer, or take the free shuttle bus, can see their weekly parking rates drop to $27 - $40 per week, depending on the lot (stay on Abbott Drive, just past the Airfield entrance). Hey look! A coupon for $1 off daily parking!

Wi-Fi Internet

Unlike many other airports, wireless internet access as Eppley is free. Isn’t that sweet? Your laptop should get a signal almost anywhere in the airport and connect automatically. If it doesn’t, open your wireless software, and look for the SSID Oma-Freewifi. Next stop: Omaha.net!
