Experimental percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani is coming to the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts for a special one-night performance on Saturday, March 16. Doors open at 8:30 pm and the concert will begin at 9:00 pm. Tickets are $6 for members and $8 for non-members.

Originally from Osaka Japan, Nakatani is a contemporary percussionist that has performed around the world. Utilizing instruments he creates himself – including drums, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls and metal objects – Nakatani’s sound is wholly unique, defying easy category or genre classification.

In addition to his solo performance on March 16, Nakatani will be conducting a performance of the Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) an experimental collaborative effort with local musicians. As a solo performer, Nakatani is limited to just two gongs. But with ten hands playing ten gongs, the music of NGO creates a metallic temple of deep harmonies, the sound emanating from the furthest reaches of the frequency pool.

The unconventional, uncontrollable, and uncertain qualities of these gong sounds are Nakatani’s passion. Since the late 1990ʼs, Nakatani has released over sixty CD recordings in the USA and Europe. In addition to his solo and group performances, he has taught classes, held workshops and given lectures both in the United States and overseas. He currently resides in Easton, PA.
