John Stillmunks Exhibition
Dundee Gallery will feature the recent paintings of John Stillmunks from Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 21. There will be an Opening Reception in the gallery on Friday, April 5th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
A native of Omaha, Stillmunks resides and owns the Independent Thought Gallery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Stillmunks uses his color as an outgrowth of process with dramatic use of shape and movement. He begins the types of works we’ll be seeing by smearing black paint on the canvas with a crumpled cocktail napkin. With the complexity of the range between light and dark values created by this action, subjects emerge to him. He applies color and adds shape to the smeared canvas in a sense of careful improvisation. The compositions are usually worked and reworked to develop line, value, color, and texture. Stillmunks notes, “When you improvise with a musical instrument, just like a painting, you have to know when you’re going too far or not far enough.”
