In 2011, the first Bemis Center Regional Exhibition will be presented in the Bemis Underground galleries. The Bemis Center is launching this exhibition to highlight new talent and perspectives and to establish new connections across contemporary art practices within the greater Omaha, Lincoln and Missouri Valley region. Expanding the Bemis Center’s mission to support exceptional talent, this exhibition provides the opportunity for emerging artists to present their work alongside mid-career and established artists in the cultural hub of eastern Nebraska’s contemporary arts community.

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS
Artists working and or living within 100 miles of Omaha, Nebraska are encouraged to submit entries to the 2011 Bemis Center Regional Exhibition. All media will be considered. Only original work that has not been previously displayed at the Bemis will be eligible. Work requiring special installation (including large or heavy works) will be accepted only if the artist is available to install the work by March 16. If accepted, video artists may be required to provide display equipment for the duration of the exhibition. Artists must be 18 or older as of January 1, 2011.
Entries will be submitted online only. Images and video must be uploaded to Slideroom.com no later than Friday, February 11. Include details for each image file (title of work, date executed, media and dimensions). If necessary, add a brief narrative to inform the juror about each individual work.

Go to bemis.slideroom.com and register for a Slideroom account. You will then be able to choose to apply for the 2011 Juried Exhibition. The application fee is $15 and is non-refundable. Applicants are allowed up to 5 uploads for their submission. Along with your submission, include details for each image file (title of work, date executed, media and dimensions). If necessary, add a brief narrative to inform the juror about each individual work.
ACCEPTANCE
Jury results will be announced on Tuesday, February 22. Artists whose works are accepted will be notified that day. Notices will be made via the e-mail you use for your registration; however, we must also have a telephone number where you can be reached on this date.
Any accepted work that differs from the digital image will be disqualified. The Bemis Center may reproduce accepted works for publicity, documentation, and promotion of the exhibition. All accepted works must remain at the Bemis Center until the close of the exhibition.
Three artists will be awarded a Juror’s prize of $500. Each recipient of the Juror’s prize will also be offered a solo exhibition in the Bemis Underground’s 2012 Exhibition Program.
Accepted artists should deliver all work to the Bemis Underground no later than 4pm on Saturday, March 5. The opening reception will occur on the evening of Friday, March 18 from 6-9pm. A gallery talk with the juror will take place on March 19 in the Bemis Underground Gallery.
Following the close of the exhibition, all art must be picked up by no later than 4pm on Saturday, April 23.
About the Juror
Kate Hackman is Associate Director of Charlotte Street Foundation (www.charlottestreet.org), a Kansas City-based non-profit organization recognized nationally for its multifaceted support of individual artists and its community impact. Through a range of programs and initiatives, Charlotte Street provides grants, commissions, studio residencies, and professional development training for artists, as well as presenting multi-disciplinary contemporary arts programming on ongoing basis, with a focus on the work of emerging artists. While helping to lead the organization as a whole, Kate specifically oversees its Urban Culture Project and Art through Architecture programs (www.artarch.org). Of particular interest is fostering the growth of Kansas City as an emergent arts hub, and facilitating connections and collaboration among leading-edge artists and arts endeavors in the Midwest region.
Previously Assistant Director of Exit Art, a non-profit, multi-disciplinary contemporary art space in New York City, Kate relocated to Kansas City in 1998 and has been immersed in the area’s arts community since. As Founding Editor of Review magazine, 2000-2003, she directed and managed the content of dozens of monthly print issues focused on contemporary art and the arts community of our region, and launched its architecture and urban planning annual. She has contributed art reviews and art-related writings to publications including the Kansas City Star, New Art Examiner, Ceramics Monthly, and Sculpture, and has curated and co-curated exhibitions for a range of venues, most recently an exhibition mixing Kansas City and Chicago artists, which traveled from Charlotte Street’s la Esquina venue to threewalls, Chicago. Kate previously served as Director of Art in the Loop Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to commissioning public artworks for downtown Kansas City, has taught curatorial practice at Kansas City Art Institute, and frequently speaks on Kansas City’s art community and professional practice for artists. She received her BA in Art History from Williams College in 1995.
