Opening Reception: Carol Summers: 61 Years of Printmaking
Gallery 72 is proud to present, A Retrospective: 61 Years of Printmaking, solo exhibition by internationally known printmaker Carol Summers. The exhibition opens on Friday, May 24 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. and runs through June 29, 2013. There will be a gallery talk by the artist on Saturday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m. This exhibition will present 11 additional works created since Carol Summers’ 50 Year Retrospective presented in 1999.
Carol Summers is considered by many art historians to be among only a handful of master printmakers alive today. Initially trained as a painter, he was drawn to color woodcuts around 1950 and it became his specialty thereafter. Summers developed a process and style that is both innovative and readily recognizable. His art is known for its large-scale, saturated fields of bold color, semi-abstract treatment of landscapes and a luminescent quality achieved through a woodcut printmaking process he invented.
Internationally recognized, the woodblock prints of Carol Summers are in the permanent collections of virtually every major museum in the world including the Museum Of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Summers is the recipient of numerous grants from the Italian Government, Tiffany, Fulbright, and Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, and an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from his alma mater, Bard College.
